What was the inspiration for this book?

Dixie: My paternal grandmother helped raise me. When I was a little girl, she sewed me an apron exactly like the one in Apron Strings. When she passed away, I experienced some deep grief. In the midst of my sorrow, I was rummaging through a dresser drawer and rediscovered my little apron. As I studied each little stitch, God comforted my heart. I sat mesmerized by the clues my apron held.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Dixie: I love when Lexi tells her grandmother that the apron strings will be tied around her heart forever.

Is this your first published book?

Dixie: No. I have six other titles with Guardian Angel Publishing: Angel Eyes, Stubby’s Destiny, One Noble Journey, Baby Jesus is Missing, Cinderfella and the Furry Godmother, and Stilts the Stork.

Dixie: My husband and I have been married for thirty-four years and been honored to serve the Gospel Lighthouse Church and Academy in Floyd, Iowa, for thirty years. Paul and I have four grown children, three grandboys, and one granddaughter. I am a ghostwriter and also enjoy songwriting. Our hands are full, but our hearts are even fuller.

Interview with Roey Ebert, AUTHOR and ILLUSTRATOR of Put it Back, Jack.

GAP FAMILY BLOG WELCOMES Roey Ebert, AUTHOR and ILLUSTRATOR OF Put it Back, Jack. Congratulations on the release of Put it Back, Jack. Please tell us more about it.

Roey: It is the story of two young brothers who take a walk through the woods. The younger brother, Jack, decides to take something from the woods much to the surprise of his older brother, Max. Both brothers end up falling in love with this creature but know it must return to its family. This book brings together the beauty of nature and family and how they must always stay intact.

What was the inspiration for this book?

Roey: My son, Jack, found a baby deer hidden in our ivy. It was so small he could have put it in his pocket. Instead of that option, I convinced him to let me write a book about it. And, that’s exactly what I did.

What is your favorite moment from the book?

Roey: The moment when big brother Max starts to love the baby deer as much as Jack. It is the moment when they kick the soccer ball in the basement, just as best friends would. He was no longer the big brother but a best friend.

What is your favorite illustration from the book?

Roey: Without a doubt, the picture of Jack kissing the baby deer in the basement. This was the painting that I felt I really had it right. I had Jack the way I like him and the deer the way I wanted him. And you could feel the love between this little boy and this little forest animal, just by the way the deer reached up to kiss Jack.

Is this your first published book?

Roey: I have illustrated before but never authored a book. So this is my first published book that I have written.

What medium did you use for illustrating this book?

Roey: I used acrylic gouache and black ink.

How do you choose?

Roey: It was definitely trial and error. I started with acrylic…my favorite medium and then had a workshop with Lindsay Barrett George who encouraged me to use gouache. I had tried charcoal pencils and watercolor and did not like the outcome. So, I tried gouache and was hooked. I loved the pigment and the control. I also used black ink to outline.

Did you have to do any research to illustrate this book?

Roey: Yes, my son, Duke, gave me pictures of deer and gave me his toy deer to sketch. I also made my children pose in all kinds of positions to get it right. I used old photos of my 15-year-old, from when he was 2 years old, because he had the look I was going for…big head, big belly and lots of mischief.

We’d love to hear more about you.

Roey: I am the mom to 6 kids…15 years to 2 years. I recently started my own company called Roey’s Paintbox Parties, canvas painting parties, out of the belief that you should never waste your talents. This company combines my love of art, teaching and just plain, fun into a business. I am so proud of this first book. Even as an 8th grade teacher, I would incorporate children’s storybooks into my lesson planning. To me, there is nothing like the feeling of being read a good story.

Do you have any book signing events or book tours scheduled for Put it Back, Jack?

Roey: Yes, I did multiple school visits during Catholic Schools’ Week in the Lehigh Valley, PA. I have events planned at a large elementary school in Allentown, PA called St. Thomas More for April and another for St. Theresa’s in Hellertown, PA in April. I plan on visiting local bookstores and other schools in the near future.

What Exactly Is Leap Year? By GAP Author Kai Strand

This is a leap year. Leap years are needed every four years to maintain the alignment between the calendar and the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days to circle one full time around the Sun. By adding a day to every fourth year, we ‘catch up’ with the extra quarter day for each annual revolution.

Julius Cesar introduced the leap day of February 29th into the Julian calendar more than 2000 years ago, but his calculations were off and he had them too frequently. Eventually the seasons weren’t lining up with the calendar. 1500 years later, the Gregorian calendar designated that every year divisible by 4 would be a leap year. Which makes me wonder what date the Romans thought it was when the Gregorian calendar took over.

Turns out, the Julian calendar was off by ten days. The year the Gregorian calendar fixed the mistake, it jumped from October 4th to October 15th. The people worried that it meant their lives would be shorter and there was protesting in the streets. “We want our 10 days back!”

Even with the extra day thrown in, our calendar still doesn’t line up perfectly with the solar year, so it was decided that any year divisible by 100 would not have a leap year, except when divisible by 400. So there was no leap day in 1900, but it was celebrated with the extra calendar date in 2000. Phew! Did you catch all that?

Were you born on a leap day? Congratulations, you are finally another year older this year. Just kidding. Most people born on a leap day celebrate either February 28th or March 1st during non-leap years. Some astrologers believe people born on a leap day have unusual talents and personalities to signify their special status. What is your unusual talent?

Wanting to take advantage of the date’s unusual status, on February 29, 2012, 56 countries will be celebrating Rare Disease Day hoping to draw attention to needed research for ailments with no known cure. Hopefully they don’t have to wait another four years to call attention to worthy research.

Today we are sophisticated enough to know that we could decide to call the day “purple” and it won’t change the actual rising and setting of the sun or the revolution of the Earth. The calendar is a man made assignment of value that simply helps us to stay in tune with each other.

So, happy Leap Year to you. We may assign the day a special moniker, but in the end it is just another day full of opportunities and possibilities.

The INTERNET Magic – Harness it for GOOD!

I have always scribbled stories. However, none of them became published until after I became a Teacher’s Aide and discovered the Internet. I began telling classes tales of my Aussie homeland, and their weird and wonderful critters. I had done this with my own kids, so they wouldn’t forget their homeland. A teacher suggested I write them down, as I had a tendency to change the endings, and kids noticed this very fast.

This was when computers were just beginning to be in homes. I nagged until my husband agreed to buy a computer – all 1 ½ gigs of HD! I went online and discovered a really great site for children’s writers. As luck would have it, several talented and generous hearted writers, now well published themselves, took me under their wing. I learned the writing rules. I learned patience. I became determined to become published. I began to value the benefits of rewriting my manuscripts and reading those of others. Oh, my, what pearls I learned from reading my talented critique group’s manuscripts. Yet rewrites and rejections still filled my days for a l-o-n-g time. Then I formed a private online critique group with other like-minded members, and my writing took a turn for the more publishable. YEA.

A friend recommended me to a publisher, and they accepted my first rhyming picture book. Eventually, this became Wild and Wonderful, a 7 book series that offered fun facts about animals from the US and Australia. Each book had a different illustrator from a different state, or part of the world. Finding them was as easy as asking on my writing list if there were any illustrators willing to give their career a boost by illustrating my books. You could never do that today, and expect wonderful illustrations for a cut of the proceeds. This was early days, and these were eBooks.

Kangaroo Clues, the first in the series, was illustrated by an artist in Turkey. He spoke no English and did not own a computer. How was this possible you ask? Again I have to thank the Internet. An online friend, also Turkish, and famous for her own children’s books, suggested I use her illustrator, Mustafa Delioglu. She sent me some of the books he had illustrated for her, and his work was awesome. His other art hung in galleries over Europe. I shouted, YES!

This friend acted as translator for both of us. Talk about a marathon effort for a friend. Fortunately Mustafa lived near her, so she went back-and- forth with my e-mails, and his replies to them, for months. Almost a year went past before the illustrations were completed and the book finally published. I was thrilled with the results. His magical illustrations came together with my rhymes in a delightful marriage of fun reading. It was information kids could enjoy, while learning about Aussie animals.

Instead of large land masses surrounded by oceans, the Internet has given us all a chance to become closer, learn about each other’s customs, and celebrate different people with different talents. I find this particularly true with Manuscript Critiquing. Clients come to me from all over the globe. We chat, I help them write tight and terrific books, and we share details of our lives and our countries.

One lady from Latvia e-mailed me every day about her life, her writing, and her country. I replied in like fashion – the difference from my end being, that I corrected her English in MY replies to her. At the end of a year her English had improved out of sight, and I had a firm friend from a part of the world I had never thought about before I became a fan of the Internet.

The Internet is the future: brimming with opportunities for improved lifestyles, good works and aiding others. Stopping those who scheme to use it for vice and other dangerous endeavors must be our current priority.

Soapy Studies by Kai Strand, Author of The Weaver

Traditionally the first few months of the new year have always been the months my kids struggle to stay interested in their studies. So I have gotten creative to help my kids study in surprising (and possibly annoying) ways that have prove effective.

I started this when my children were still young enough to have weekly spelling tests. We all know that studying anything weekly can get monotonous. Our traditional way of studying for spelling was to give our children a test at the beginning of the week to determine which words they needed to study. Then we would have them write out each word five times and spell it out loud as they wrote it down. The audible aspect proved just as successful as the repetition for memorization.

However, that method became less enjoyable and a bit tired after the holiday hoopla left them staring at a long stretch of school days. We’d still give them the test at the beginning of the week to determine which words they needed the most support in learning, but then we’d switch things up. All bets were off and studying could happen at all hours of the day.

Stumbling into the bathroom early morning to take a shower, they might find their words written (in soap) on the bathroom mirror. Or perhaps I’d write one with syrup on their breakfast pancakes. My favorite was the ‘earn it’ method of index cards. I taped index cards all around the house; on the pantry door or refrigerator, on the door frame of the playroom, their bedroom, the bathroom, anywhere I knew they were going to be, with one spelling word written on each card. Then we’d require our studying child to write the word three times before entering, or getting a snack, or a drink. Over the course of a week, they wrote their words far more times than our traditional study method.

An added benefit to the public display of spelling is that all the children in your household benefit, regardless of their education level. I sort of miss the whimsy of writing on the mirror with soap. Plus there is no guarantee the mirror is washed weekly any more. Hmmm … maybe I’ll start leaving them soapy love notes.

If your child is struggling with academic doldrums, get creative and surprise them with a new way of studying.

Children’s Ezine Guardian Angel Kids: Siblings – January 2012 Issue

The beginning of a new year usually brings a time of reflection on the year gone by and hopes of the new year filled with health, happiness, and success. As I get older, I conduct a mental housecleaning of simplifying my life and taking a concerted effort to enjoy the moment of the current day, instead of worrying about the "what if's", because often times the "what's if's" don't even come into play. It takes time to break the "what if" habit, try it today and focus in on your tasks of the day instead of obsessing about tomorrow. I know for myself I find myself not as drained if I focus on the here and now, instead of what I think the coming days, weeks, and months should be.

GAP Author Cheryl C. Malandrinos's New Year's Resolution

Here is another New Year's resolution from a member of the GAP family. Cheryl C. Malandrinos is the author of Little Shepherd.

I stopped making New Year's resolutions a long time ago. This year, however, I am in the middle of many changes in my life and resolutions in regards to my writing seem more important than ever.

In 2012, I resolve to work hard at finding homes for the six picture books I wrote during May 2011's Picture Book Writing Week. Two have been rejected by literary agents already, but I will spend part of 2012 revising them and sharing them with my critique groups to see if I can change that. In addition, despite the fact that I plan to return to working outside my home for the first time in eight years, I resolve to finish my two works in progress--Hold Your Horses (Christian juvenile) and Amelia's Mission (middle grade historical)--and get them ready for submission.

Cheryl Malandrinos is a freelance writer, children’s author and editor. Her first children’s book, Little Shepherd, was released in August 2010 by Guardian Angel Publishing. GAP Author Nicole Weaver's New Year's Resolution

We thought it would be fun to have some of our Angels share their New Year's resolutions. First up is Nicole Weaver. She is the author of the trilingual book, My Sister is My Best Friend.

My new year’s writing resolutions are to edit my middle-grade novel titled, There’s Nothing Wrong with being Smart and to start writing a woman’s novel titled, No Place to Belong. I recently took an eight-week YA class with Victoria Hanley, an award –winning author of teen fiction published in 10 languages. I learned so much from taking Victoria’s class. Each week during class, she critiqued 10 pages of my manuscript. Now, I need to take the time to re-write the manuscripts following her suggestions.

I plan to take a second class on writing woman’s fiction. I will be able to get No Place to Belong critiqued. It is a win-win situation for a new author.

Additionally, I need to make time to promote my newly released book My Sister is My Best Friend. I look forward to having a great 2012.

After having been both an elementary school teacher, a university professor of education and a consultant for New Options, Inc. in New York City, Nancy Stewart writes children’s books full time. She, her husband and three sons, lived in London for eight years, where she was a consultant to several universities, including Cambridge.

Her travels take her extensively throughout the world, most particularly Africa. Nancy is US chair of a charity in Lamu, Kenya, that places girls in intermediate schools to allow them to further their education.

Nancy is the author of the Bella and Britt picture book series, One Pelican at a Time, Sea Turtle Summer, Bella Saves the Beach and Mystery at Manatee Key. All are published by Guardian Angel Publishing. Pelican was nominated for a Global eBook Award.

She was featured in the PBS Tampa (WEDU) series, Gulfwatch. It concerned the writing of One Pelican at a Time: A Story of the Gulf Oil Spill.

Easy Language Acquisition Activities by GAP Author Nicole Weaver

Due you lack ideas on what activities to do to keep your child interested in learning French or Spanish. If you answered yes, here is what you can do.

Make a habit to introduce seasonal themes. This is an easy and fun way to introduce new vocabulary to kids. For example, since it is now fall you can spend some time introducing vocabulary relating to fall. Furthermore, you can always take your child to the park to experience what fall is like. Have your child gather leaves that have fallen to the ground and make a collage with it.

Next, have the child label each item in English first, then label it in the language your child is interested in learning.

Here are some concrete examples:

Autum/L’automne/El otoño

Leaves/Les feuilles/Las hojas

We go to school in the fall/On va à l’école en automne/Vamos a la escuela al otoño

Holiday Traditions by GAP Author Kai Strand

The day after Thanksgiving is often the day families decorate their homes for Christmas. But in my friend’s household, it is the kickoff day of a beloved family tradition. Each year, Jen pulls out a decorative sleigh large enough for a toddler to sit in and fills it with their collection of Christmas books. She’s been collecting books related to the Christmas holiday since her boys were babies. They have titles that range from traditional stories to quirky tales. But what makes the tradition so special in my eyes is that each night from the evening the books are set out until Christmas itself, her boys pick one book to be read. At some point in the evening, after homework is completed, or tae-kwon-do class is over, but before the boys shuffle off to brush their teeth and maybe even curl up with a book of their own, Jen and her boys settle together in the living room to read a Christmas story. They have some favorite books, which have been read repeatedly over the years, but they also look forward to sharing new stories together.

Can’t you just picture the cozy scene? The boys cuddled under their throws either laughing at Christmas antics or in awe over the story of Jesus’ birth; and Jen, sharing those moments night after night, year after year with her (now 10 and 13 yr old) boys.

What a lovely and enduring tradition.

GAP Illustrator K.C. Snider Joins the SCBWI

Artist K.C. Snider, who has illustrated such Guardian Angel Publishing books as the award-winning historical storybook, The Golden Pathway by Donna McDine, the tween chapter book, The Weaver by Kai Strand, the Andy and the Albino Horse series by Mary Jean Kelso, and newly released, The Milk Horse by Cat Luce, has become a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

K.C. Snider, an honors graduate from The Eugene School for Art, is a prominent Oregon artist. Her love of the western life and of wildlife has been developed since her youth. She had a natural talent for drawing and color exhibited since she was ten years old. She has shared her talents as an Art Instructor at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Her painting, the “Brothers of the Wolves I”, has been published by Colorado’s Leanin’ Tree, Inc. Her painting, “Spirit of the Hunter,” was chosen by Leanin' Tree for the 2006 Christmas card line.

Originally specializing in Western Art, K.C. has branched out into a variety of styles and subjects. Her collection of oil paintings, lithographs, and pencil drawings include portraits of the All-American Cowboy and Cowgirl and their lifestyles of days gone by. Recently, K.C. has been sculpting using a variety of subjects including cowboys, domestic animals and other funny caricatures and is working on her first bronze, “The All-American Cowgirl.”

K.C.’s paintings incorporate horses of all breeds, majestic wolves and buffalo herds, as well as eagles and other native birds of prey, in their rustic natural habitats. The western terrain in her art is not only very detailed, but it also transcends time. Now a resident of Redmond, Oregon, K.C. is inspired by the natural beauty of the high desert of Central Oregon. In some of her works, if one looks closely, the visions of spirits create an inspiring visual impact. K.C. has a gift for capturing the shimmering iridescence of the spirit world. In her reverent detail, one can almost hear the howl of wolves and the trampling of running horses on dusty trails as their stories depicted on the canvases come to life in the mind’s eye.

K.C.’s artwork has won many awards during her long career. Her rainbow collection of prize ribbons from all over the Northwest is as colorful as her work. Recently, K.C. has won plaques from the 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Western Art Roundup at Winnemucca, Nevada. She has won prizes in several categories, as well as the prestigious Snaffle Bit Award for her authentic Western Art, the Pioneer Award for the depiction of life on the High Desert, and the Indian Heritage Award for her piece titled, “Hope of the White Buffalo.”

K.C. has now completed illustrating a number of children’s’ books. The Christmas Angel, with author Mary Jean Kelso and The Magic Violin, with Mayra Calvani were the first of the books published by Guardian Angel Publishing.

How to Make a Picture Book Editor Yell, "WOW!"

November is Picture Book Month, so when I was asked to submit an article for the GAP Blog, I thought the logical topic was Picture Books. I write ‘em, I read ‘em, I critique ’em and I LOVE ‘em.
So, read on. . .

There are oodles of picture books out there. Some are waiting in slush piles, while others are contenders, already going through the approval process. Then, there are all those bookstores, large and small, that have shelves loaded with picture books. Every conceivable theme and plot line has already been written - thousands of times. So, how can you hit the jackpot with your PB?

The First Thing to Consider:

Don't worry about finding a new kind of story - it's not going to happen mates! What you need is a neat out-of-the-box scenario: a fresh new way to write a fun story about bunnies, horses, moonbeams or new babies - whatever. Nothing is set in stone. Jot down your ideas, and then turn them sideways, upside-down or inside-out. All things being equal, quirky and fresh gets the brass ring.

Think of the picture books you loved as a kid, or now love to read to your kids. Take one of these stories and think about what made it appeal to you or your child. Then reinvent it. This is not plagiarism. It is dissecting a PB: plot, characters and setting, until you know the secret of its success. Use that knowledge to craft a new story, completely your own. Exploit the principles of success you discovered while doing the dissecting.

The Writing:

Tight writing for picture books is the golden rule. Use powerful and active verbs,

Great verbs are a PB writer's best friend. Search for adjectives that surprise and delight your reader. Be specific when referring to people, places, and events. Simplicity is a splendid goal. Beware like, nice, very, walked, sat, ran, and their ilk. You can find better, stronger, and more innovative words. Seemed, I think, perhaps and some - all four have weakness in common. Write with words that signify strength, action and power. Think of your text as a garden with rampant growth. Prune those sentences until your word count is way below 1,000 words.

The writer that prunes ruthlessly is the one who becomes published.

Your First Paragraph or Verse:

Editors are buried under piles of manuscripts waiting to be read, work related in-office conferences, and time spent conferring with the art director, and dictating rejection letters - to name just a few chores that crowd their days. If your first few lines don't make an editor say, "Wow!" you can forget advances and royalty payments. Those first few lines need to make an editor eager to read more. Your goal is to have her think, "Hey, this is something new and different."

So, set up those first lines as if your publishing life depended on them - because it does. Make them fun: full of action or quirky ideas. Introduce the main character in a way that makes a lasting impression. Describe a wild and way-out setting. Craft those lines using ideas with a twist, and characters that kids demand to read about, over-and-over. Of course this will cause you big problems with the rest of your story. Why? Because you have already set an incredibly high writing standard, and you must maintain that standard until THE END.

The Right Publisher:

You must find a publisher who publishes books similar to yours. More rejections are sent because the author chose the wrong publisher, than because the writing was lousy. If you write picture books about animals, it is a waste of time sending your manuscript to religious, non-fiction, or mid-grade only publishers. In addition, you need to fine-tune your search even further. IE: Some publishers will accept animal stories, but not stories about talking animals. It is a simple matter of doing your homework.

Finding a publisher that has an editor who needs a book like yours, loves your writing style, and is in sync with your ideas for your book can be a crap shoot. Because, unless you are already know to the editor (translation: published by them and made them lots of money), or have editorial or publishing connections via different sources, you are left to wade through miles of publishing websites, looking at the books they have recently published, plus their submission guidelines.

The CWIM (Children's Writers and Illustrator's Market) is a wonderful source of legitimate publishing houses, website addresses, and clues about what publishers want from you. Book stores and libraries are other places you can find stories along the lines of yours. Make notes about who published them.

• Secrets of Writing for Children : Lots of help and guidance.

• Amazon Book/Publisher Search: For more focused searches on individual authors, publishers, or subjects, the best bet is Amazon's dedicated search page.

• Writer's Market: They update information regularly, including editors to contact. They have a program where you can track submissions, but it costs to join. Writer's Market also has a free update site. You don't have to subscribe to the magazine to get the updates.

• Verla Kay's WebSite: A mult-published author. A wonderful resource site. Click Artists & Writers and then Transcripts. Look for back transcripts of chat with editors.

In Conclusion:

The principles of making sure your manuscript is ready for a publisher/editor is the same for all books: tight writing, great choice of words, strong story and memorable characters. For picture books, you need only a few words, and then weave them into a marvelous story. Your book must keep the interest of small children with the attention span of a puppy. How can an undertaking that looks so simple end up being one of the most difficult tasks a writer can tackle?

CELEBRATING NATIONAL FOOD DAY 2011: ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO EAT HEALTHY LUNCHES BY NICOLE WEAVER

Incorporating healthy eating on a daily basis is not difficult. Most students, because of convenience, usually purchase lunch at school. I have seen firsthand the type of junk that is served at many school cafeterias. I have been teaching for twenty-six years at the middle and high school levels. I would not feed the slop at my school to my worst enemy. The stuff is completely devoid of nutritional value. What can a parent do? Many times kids feel very uncomfortable carrying lunch to school. I bribe my kids by paying them extra allowance if they eat what I make them for lunch.

Now, let us examine what constitutes a healthy brown-bag lunch. Children need to eat a balanced meal for proper brain development. They need to eat protein, carbohydrates, and fruit. I always pack a piece of fruit with a sandwich made of whole wheat bread, cold cuts, lettuce and tomatoes, along with sliced carrots or celery sticks. I only purchase cold cuts that are nitrites and nitrates free and raised without added hormones. Non-organic meats are loaded with deadly chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer. All of my fruits are also organic.

A healthy brown-bag lunch should also include snacks. I buy organic almonds, organic raisins and dried coconut from the health-food store. I mix and put some in a snack bag. VOILA! You have a very healthy snack, which is not laced with a ton of sugar.

How about beverages? I buy organic juices for lunch. Sodas are loaded with too much sugar; too much consumption of sugar is known to deplete your body of vital nutrients. It is shameful the many soda machines that are placed in schools. Many of my students come to class with a sugar buzz. Some even fall asleep before the end of class. I also encourage my children to drink plenty of water. I am not fond of school water fountains, so I buy a polycarbonate water bottle and fill it with filtered water. This bottle is glass-like, non-porous, no plastic or dioxine leaching. The traditional plastic bottle leaks cancer-causing chemicals in the water. The bottle can be kept in a locker or a backpack for easy access.

As parents, we have a duty to make sure our children are well cared for. Healthy minds and bodies start from the inside.

My daughter graduated with top honors from high school and now my sixteen-year-old will be a junior. I will monitoring his eating habits, just as I did my daughter's. He may get some weird looks, but at least he will be in the best of health.

• In 1817 the first free school for the deaf was founded in Hartford, Connecticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc.
• A curious fact is ASL came from the Old French Sign Language (OFSL). The British sign language is very different.
• Gallaudet University, located in Washington, D.C., is the first and only deaf university in the world.

Did you know babies can be taught to communicate with sign before they are able to speak?

At times people have been afraid to teach their babies to sign out of fear it would delay the baby’s verbal development, but studies have shown this is untrue. In fact increased cognitive skills and vocabulary are the result.

In 1966 the project attempted to teach a chimpanzee to ask questions in ASL, to understand and interact with her environment using language. Raised like a member of a family in a trailer with a refrigerator, bed, clothes, etc. Everyone communicated with her through sign language. She learned 350 words and taught other chimps to speak ASL.

Koko is a gorilla who learned in over of 1,000 signs based on ASL. There is some disagreement about whether she truly understands language and uses it to express herself or only uses it based on a “reward response.” Her trainer insists she uses ASL to express herself and has created unique word combinations without any reward.

Kai Strand, author of The Weaver, will be participating in the Oregon Book and Author Fair on Saturday, November 5th. The one day event will run from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Central Pointe, Oregon.

K.C. Snider, an honors graduate from The Eugene School for Art, is a prominent Oregon artist. Her love of the western life and of wildlife has been developed since her youth, with her natural talent for drawing and color exhibited since she was ten years old. She has shared her talents as an Art Instructor at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon.

K.C.’s paintings incorporate horses of all breeds, majestic wolves and buffalo herds, as well as eagles and other native birds of prey, in their rustic natural habitats. The western terrain in her art is not only very detailed, but it also transcends time. Now a resident of Redmond, Oregon, K.C. is inspired by the natural beauty of the high desert of Central Oregon.

K.C.’s artwork has won many awards during her long career. Her rainbow collection of prize ribbons from all over the Northwest is as colorful as her work. Recently, K.C. has won plaques from the 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Western Art Roundup at Winnemucca, Nevada. She has won prizes in several categories, as well as the prestigious Snaffle Bit Award for her authentic Western Art, the Pioneer Award for the depiction of life on the High Desert, and the Indian Heritage Award for her piece titled, “Hope of the White Buffalo.”

In 2006, K.C. illustrated two children’s’ books, The Christmas Angel, with author Mary Jean Kelso and The Magic Violin, with Mayra Calvani. Both books were published by Guardian Angel Publishing and are also available as e-Books. The Christmas Angel has been an instant success with children, teachers and grandmothers alike. It tells the tale of a young girl who travels with her family to Oregon in the 1830’s on the Oregon Trail and protects a very precious possession, the family’s Christmas tree topper, a porcelain angel. She has now finished illustrations for Andy And The Albino Horse, the first book in a series about an albino horse named “Spirit” and the special children who get to know her. The Andy and Spirit books have a number of sequels already in print. And the sequel to The Christmas Angel titled One Family's Christmas is now available along with K.C.’s first collaboration with author Marilee Crow called Does Heaven Get Mail?

K.C. has been married for 49 years to Fred who is retired from Weyerhauser and is K.C.’s biggest supporter. He does all her framing and some very vital computer work so that K.C. can stay in the studio. They live with their dachshund mix, Jack, in Redmond, Oregon. Banned Books Week - September 24th - October 1st

This week we celebrate Banned Books Week. According to the American Library Association (ALA), this annual event that takes place during the last week of September, celebrates, "the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment."

Those books featured during Banned Books Week have been the targets of attempted banning. Thanks to the efforts of teachers, librarians,booksellers and concerned citizens, many books that were targeted have not been banned or restricted.

It might surprise you to find some of your favorite books on the list. Classics such as The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone With the Wind, The Call of the Wild, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest have all been targets. Did you know Charlotte's Web was a target on more than one occasion? In 2002, the ALA listed the Captain Underpants books as the sixth most challenged. The Junie B. Jones series came in at #71 on the ALA's Top 100 Banned or Challenged Books from 2000-2009.

In honor of Banned Books Week, readers are being encouraged to hold a virtual read-out. Everyone is invited to create a video of themselves reading from their favorite banned or challenged book and upload it to a special Banned Books Week channel.

Don’t Force-Feed Your Emerging Reader by GAP Author Kai Strand

An important key to a child’s developing literacy is to read and be read to frequently. Our school assigned homework of 20 minutes per day through elementary school. Twenty minutes can be a lifetime to a reluctant reader. Trust me, I know from firsthand experience.

So how do you get your child to put in their required reading time without a lot of whining or a spectacular tantrum? Don’t force-feed them the material. If your child wants to read The Bone Series by Jeff Smith, don’t wrinkle your nose because they are graphic novels. Ask your child to read it to you and experience something new for yourself. If they pick up the board book version of, Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, don’t dismiss it as too juvenile. Allow them to read it again and again. Take them to a bookstore and let them browse the section that carries content with the appropriate reading level and let them choose two or three titles without your input.

Handing your child Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, and expecting them to have interest just because it is a classic might turn your child away from reading more than enticing them to read. Setting Charlotte’s Web in a stack of several books for your child to choose from, might result in you experiencing the classic together when your child chooses it to read on their own and you take turns reading aloud to each other.

A child needs someone to guide their choices in order to assure the content is appropriate for their age and reading level, but they don’t need you forcing your childhood reading preferences upon them.

Reading is reading, whether it be a picture book or the instructions to a new board game. Letting your child choose what they read during their required reading time will make the experience much more enjoyable for both of you.

Benefits of Summer Reading Programs by Cheryl Malandrinos

I'm a big fan of summer reading programs. I used to sign up at my local library every year when I was a kid. Yes, the prizes were nice, but the best memories are of the many books I read during the few months I was out of school.

This year, both my girls signed up for the One World, Many Stories summer reading program at the Wilbraham Public Library. I'm thrilled to see it. My youngest has always been a big reader, but the older of the two girls swears off anything that seems like schoolwork over the summer.

When kids aren't learning over the summer, they are at a distinct disadvantage when they return in the fall. As a parent and a children's author, I hate to see that happen. Volunteering at our local schools, I see how hard the students and educators work all year long. It's a shame to see some of that lost when kids aren't engaged in meaningful activities over the summer.

Summer Reading Programs offer not only the opportunity to learn, they allow kids to interact with their peers by providing group activities. As part of One World, Many Stories, the girls are participating in The Great Create, which is a weekly art workshop. Both my girls love art, so it's perfect. These programs also teach kids about goal setting and time management, skills they will use throughout their lives.

Check out your local library to see what they're doing this summer. The fun is just beginning.

After having been an elementary school teacher, a management consultant with New Options, Inc. in New York City and a university professor of education, Nancy Stewart now writes children’s books full time. Nancy travels extensively throughout the world, most particularly Africa. She is the US chair of a charity in Lamu, Kenya, that places girls in intermediate schools to allow them to further their education.

Five Tips for a More Marketable Children’s Picture Book Manuscript by GAP Author Mayra Calvani

The world of children’s picture book publishing is extremely competitive. If you’re an aspiring children’s author, you need to make sure your manuscript is in excellent shape and has all the elements editors and agents look for before you begin the submission process.

Here are five tips to make your picture book manuscript more marketable:

Start right with the problem.

Many times beginner writers begin a picture book with backstory. It’s okay to have this backstory in the first draft, but be sure to get rid of it when you edit. Backstory is unnecessary 90% of the time and it only serves to slow down the beginning of a story, making it weaker. You want to grab the reader right from the start. So don’t be afraid to begin your story at the heart of the problem. It’s okay to set the stage with a sentence or two—but no more!

Have a protagonist readers can relate to.

Generally, children like to listen to stories about other children or animals with children’s characteristics. They don’t want to hear about a grandma or grandpa looking back to the time when they were young. Create characters kids can identify with. When readers can identify with the protagonist, they are drawn into the story and become emotionally involved with it.

Make sure the problem fits the age group.

Be sure your protagonist is facing a problem young readers can relate to. If they can’t relate to it, they won’t care. Losing a toy or losing mommy, being lost, having a tooth pulled out, going to the hairdresser for the first time, having too many freckles, planning a first party... these are all problems kids can identify with. Sure, these subjects have been done a million times. But so what? By creating a new angle about a familiar topic, you can give the topic your own fresh and original slant

Add rising action.

Rising action creates tension—the good stuff that keeps readers glued to the story, turning those pages. After you have created the first big problem for the protagonist, and as he tries to solve it, toss a couple more obstacles into his path to make readers wonder what’s going to happen next. The more readers care about the character’s predicament, the more compelling they’ll find the story.

Leave them with a punch.

Endings are always important, no matter what the genre. But they’re especially important in picture books. Once the protagonist solves the problem and everything falls into place, you must find a way to make the ending memorable. This can be achieved by adding an unexpected twist or by having the character say or do something witty. At the same time, it must feel natural, a perfect and logical progression that has evolved organically with the story. This can be hard to achieve. Try different possibilities until you get that “Aha!” feeling. Don’t be afraid to come up with crazy, over-the-top ideas while you brainstorm.

Keeping these tips in mind when creating your children’s stories will help you make them more marketable and appealing to editors and agents. Like with any craft, writing for children is a never ending learning process. I hope you’ll keep at it and enjoy the journey.

Bringing Up A Reader by GAP Author Susan J. Berger

You already know about reading to your kids on a regular basis. Then comes the transition. They have to learn to read for themselves.

For some children, this isn’t easy. Some don’t learn to read on schedule. I was one of them.

I was sent down from first grade to a class called Pre Primer. (This is a grade that no longer exists. It was a transition between Kindergarten and First Grade. I still remember the walk home with the note to my mom. In pre primer I was introduced to sounding out and Dick and Jane (Boring!) But I learned and by age 8, I was already a bookaholic.

One thing that remained important for me for several years was large print and plenty of white space. It made the process of decoding so much easier.

When my sons were learning to read, I looked for those kinds of books. In the beginning stages, I also looked for funny, short and simple. I wanted them to experience an easy sense of accomplishment.

Chris had a very hard time with reading. He felt so badly that he couldn’t read in Kindergarten that he memorized a book – The Fat Cat by Jack Kent. Then he went and “read” it to his class.

My problem with these series:

They aren’t easy enough. They encouraged learning a lot of different sounds at the same time. I thought Chris needed to work with one sound at a time. It makes decoding simpler. I used Hop on Pop which has great sound groupings.

In desperation I wrote him a book: Cat and Rat or War and Peace for the challenged reader. It’s a funny “boy” book. Someday I am going to get it published. (It’s been out a few times. I forget which publisher sent it back with a note that it was too violent. He had obviously never seen Tom and Jerry).

I told him to stop worrying. That reading would come. And it did…about second grade. He was not truly comfortable reading till third grade.

GAP author Kristen Zajac will be conducting three readings of her latest release, Chasing the Spirit of Service, at the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival. The Festival is being held this Saturday and Sunday, January 15-16, 2011, at the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa. The Black Heritage Festival features live entertainment, speakers, food, arts, and crafts. Ms. Zajac will be conducting her book readings in the Festival's "Children's Village" which will host a variety of activities for families with young children including face painting, storytelling, educational activities, and arts and crafts. After the storytime, the Children's Village is offering small prizes to children who answer questions about the Tuskegee Airmen, featured in Ms. Zajac's book.
